SUSTAINABILITY

Environmental Quality Mark

For many years we have held the Peak District Environmental Quality Mark.  During this time, we have continued to upgrade our facilities with the environment in mind.  Now that we face a climate crisis, we have pledged to put sustainability at the heart of everything we do.  Every decision we make, be it purchasing supplies, upgrading energy efficiency, or supporting our local community needs to meet this goal.

We live in a very special place – a busy and vibrant National Park which provides a unique environment for all to enjoy. However, it needs caring for and protecting and these are some of the things we currently do to help:

Our Guests

  • We are lucky to be positioned in the beautiful countryside but also with excellent transport links via bus and train. We promote these modes of travel to help our guests think about their carbon footprint

  • We suggest lots of things to do “from the door” so you can leave your cars and there’s no designated driver

  • We encourage our guests to recycle everything, offering plastics, tin, glass, carboard and paper, and food recycling

  • We supply soap in refillable dispensers but ask guests to bring their own shampoo, conditioner and body lotion reducing use of single use plastic

  • We are committed to improving our inclusivity and we are working towards accreditation from VisitEngland under the National Accessible Scheme

  • We have moved to using an online booking system thus becoming paperless

Our Suppliers

  • On arrival you will find a delicious treat to enjoy

  • Emma can drop off ready-made homecooked meals in ceramic over to tableware which reduces single use materials

  • We encourage guests to support our wonderful local independent suppliers and community stores for fresh food, groceries and gifts

  • We use “green” cleaning products which are good for the environment

  • Our Eco towels are made from organic cotton and are sustainably produced

  • Our Hypnos beds are made sustainably in the UK and the old they came and recycled our old beds for free as part of their service

  • We receive digital invoices and pay suppliers online – we have become a paperless business

Our Staff

  • All staff live in the local area

  • Everyone is committed to caring for our environment

  • We have regular meetings to share our ideas and your feedback to see what we can do to improve the lodge.

Our Community

  • We network with other local businesses to influence and be influenced and share ideas to grow our sustainability efforts

  • We are members of the Hope Valley Climate Action group

  • We encourage guests to book foraging nature walks and equine facilitated life-coaching activities provided by Hope Valley Herbal Solutions which promote the healing and nourishing properties of nature

Our Environment

  • We decorate walls with work by extremely ethically and community minded local artists who draw inspiration from the dramatic gritstone edges and hills of the Peak District

  • We keep the banks at the front and back of the property wild enabling wildflowers and grass to grow which support the local ecosystem, especially the bees

  • We compost all of our fruit and veg waste and use it to rejuvenate the garden

We regularly review our environmental performance and are continually looking at ways to improve our practices to minimise our impact on the environment. We encourage guests to help us do this and value their feedback and comments. Please do get in touch to let us know your thoughts.
